Professional polishing of
fashion jewelry
It is often part of the plating service to have the piece polished by experienced polishers who can bring a polished piece to its full potential. Do say if you don't wish the piece to be polished; this may be the case if it is a particularly fragile piece, or you have applied a particular finish that would be damaged by polishing. Many platers also offer a sandblasting service, which puts a matte, frosted finish on metal.
The lost wax casting process transforms wax models into solid metal forms, and modern production techniques mean thatthe results are a high-quality copy of the original wax, in the precious metal of your choice. Casters can make moulds of pieces and objects so that many identical pieces can be produced. Lost wax casting
Once a form has been carved in
fashion jewelry 's wax, you can take it to a caster where it will be trans-formed into a metal replica. The wax will have a sprue attached, which is a wax stem that connects die wax to a tree along with other waxes. The tree is mounted in a base and set in a flask, which is filled with a special type of piaster called 'invest-ment.' Once the investment has set, the flask is placed in a kiln, upside down, and the wax is melted out to leave a void, giving this technique its name. While the investment is still hot, molten metal is vacuumed into the flask, filling
the void and creating a copy of the wax form. The resulting metal form will have a good surface finish with little porosity and minimal shrinkage, due to modern casting technology.
Although most casting for fashion jewelry is done in gold alloys, silver and platinum, it is also possible to find companies who will cast in other metals such as brass, bronze, stainless steel, aluminium, palladium and tarnish-resistant alloys of silver. Several different alloys of gold can be cast - make sure you know which one you want, because some are much harder to work than others.
Moulds for multiples
The lost wax process causes the original form to be destroyed, so if you require more than one copy of a form, then a mould will have to be made. Vulcanized moulds are the most com-monly used in jewelry casting because they are very durable, and will allow many wax repro-ductions to be made from a metal master. The cost of the mould-making process will depend on the size and complexity of the piece being reproduced. A charge is also made for each wax produced.
Moulds as a method of making multiples should be considered when producing cast CAD pieces, as the cost of three-dimensional wax prints is considerably higher than wax injection repli-cas, although the detail may be slightly dimin-ished through replication. Cold-cure moulds can also be used to make metal casts of objects such as natural materials or fragile objects that would not withstand the vulcanizing process
