If you've never set up a dial-up connection before, it may be confusing to get connected the first time you use such a service. A 21st Century ISP provides dial-up Internet access with access numbers across the United States. Many newcomers to the Internet have never used a dial-up modem, but find themselves needing to connect to the Internet in places where they have no access to broadband Internet. These instructions can lead you through the process of connecting to the Internet using a dial-up connection.

Look for the connection on your computer that looks like a telephone jack. Plug one end of a telephone cable (called an RJ-45 cable) into that jack. Plug the other end into the telephone jack on your wall.
Next, turn your computer on and let it boot up. When you've got your desktop up, click on the Start button in the lower right-hand corner. In the menu, click on "Computer", then click on "Network and Internet" and finally on "Network and Sharing Center". This will open the Network and Sharing Center where you can set up a new connection.

Click on "Set up a new connection or network". This will open a dialog box that contains several options. Click on the top one, "Connect to the Internet". This will open another dialog box with two options. Click on "Dial up" to open the connection dialog box.

In the top box, enter the telephone access number you want to use to access the Internet. You can get this telephone number by asking a customer service representative to find one for you before you start the whole process. Remember to enter the number exactly as you would if you were dialing it. If you need to dial a number to reach an outside line or need to dial a 1 before the number, click on "Dialing Rules" and fill in the appropriate information there, then click OK to return to the dialog box.

Then, in the second box, type your user name given to you by your 21st century ISP provider.

For your security, leave the "Show characters" box unchecked, especially if someone else uses the computer. If you check it, anyone can see your password when they access the dialog box. If you want to be able to access the Internet with just one click, check the box next to "Remember this password". If you don't want anyone else to use your Acliq.net account, leave the box next to "Allow other people to use this connection" unchecked.

Finally, click on "Connect". Your computer will now try to connect to the Internet through your Acliq.net connection.

Just a Click Away
In the future, you'll be able to just click on the icon in your Network and Sharing center or through an icon on your desktop, putting the Internet just a click away on your desktop.

If you need a dialup connection, choose a 21st Century ISP with nationwide access numbers so that you can connect no matter where you are. The right provider offers nationwide access to the Internet for a low monthly fee.
