| Getting Rid of the Harmful Wax Off an Apple's Skin |

To apple lovers, you may have had always appreciated the taste and nutrient-rich skin of the fruit. On the downside, apples are always treated with wax to prevent insects from enjoying themselves on the fruit to. Plus, with the layer of wax, they can be picked earlier and stored much longer than without the layer, because the wax holds the nutrients in the fruit, preventing it to dry out or rot quickly. It also gives a shine on the apple that makes it look more attractive than without the wax. The wax can be made out of carnauba wax, which is from the leaves of the carnauba palm, or from the shellac wax, a resin secreted by the lac beetle which is naturally used to protect the seeds of the insect. Unfortunately, while attempting to preserve this fruit that has been well-documented over history, wax can be harmful to health, and may even cause cancer over time as they accumulate in the body.
Although the solution to getting rid of the problem can be easy by peeling off the skin, one will not be able to attain the nutrients in it. Hence, one can wash away apple's wax instead. Do not simply use any detergents to get rid of the wax because apples are porous, so they can actually absorb the detergent into the fruit as well. In order to wash away apple's wax, one can mix a tablespoon of lemon juice with a tablespoon of baking soda into a sink full of water which will create a scrubbing solution to remove wax and pesticides. Then, use a soft vegetable brush to scrub the wax off the skin so that the skin does not tear apart too easily. On the other hand, if you want to get rid of bacteria as well, you can add three parts of water with one part of vinegar, and then spray it on the apple. Then, rinse off so that the vinegar taste will not stay.
On the other hand, you can opt to shop for apples that are safer to eat. In order to determine which these are, look at the label stickered onto the fruit. The conventional, non-organic ones come in four digits, beginning with the number "4". These are grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. Organic ones have five digits, and begin with the number "9". And then there are the genetically modified ones that begin with the number "8", in which you should avoid altogether. Although the word "organic" may seem like a safe choice, you should still wash your the organic apples as they are also treated, but with non-synthetic food substance. All in all, you should shop wisely, and always clean your apples to enjoy its nutrients at its very best.
