Telephone wiring makes use of a standard connector called rj11 - short for registered jack 11. This is a kind of wire used for phone terminals. The Rj11 connector houses both untwisted and untwisted pairs of wires. This top has 6 different connector position -- two or four of which are frequently utilized. Most home and office phones in all across the globe make use of this registered jack 11 wire. Making it the most commonly type of connector used. Similar jacks are RJ14 and RJ25. Connectors such as RJ 61, which is a 4-line telephone registered jack, are also somewhat similar to RJ 11 as they are also modular connectors with 6 positions. It you would look at it closely, you may also its similarities with RJ45.

The extra wires in this type of connectors can be modified or pressed to be used alternatively in other functions. It can be used in other applications. An example of which is that it can be of big help in preventing a pulse-dial type of phone from ringing an extension line. Such purpose is known as 'anti-tinkle' management. It, too, can be used as a ground for certain ringers. The rj11 connector can also easily power ring-indicators, particularly those of LED types. Ringer signals can also be manipulated through the use of this particular connector.

There are also issues concerning the real definition of RJ's or registered jacks. When one speaks of registered jacks, they are not only the wiring but also the modular connectors that come with them. The designation of an RJ variety of connector is based on its wiring patterns and nor necessary on the geometry of their individual connectors. In general, both jacks and plugs are modular connectors which are quite different from the older connectors used in telephone wiring systems. In the past, these wires are bulky and are connected directly to the wall. This is the main difference from the registered jacks with modular systems of today.

The use of this particular jack was initiated by a certain company which eventually set the standards for many telephone companies of the present time. In this system, the client is expected to provide the jacks and wirings whereas the company is responsible for the provision of service from the point of entry to the communication network. Each registered jack is an essential component of the entire telephone communication system.
